The advantages of both a short ram intake and a cold air intake are incorporated in this intake, which also includes an integrated airbox, with none of the drawbacks. This system makes use of a number of distinctive features in an effort to maintain a performance-optimal flow while reducing turbulence that may result in engine management issues. We start with a specialized conical cloth air-filter element and create a velocity stack using CFD that leads to a special air flow straightener grid. For accurate readings, the mass air flow sensor needs the incoming airflow to be smoothed out as it passes over this straightener grid. This gets rid of the "dead spots" caused by turbulence in other aftermarket intakes. These essential design components are not utilized by any other aftermarket Subaru intake system.

We employ a one-piece design made from a high-temperature plastic composite in order to produce a system that matches the aesthetic improvements on the outside with the technological breakthroughs taking place on the inside. In addition to being lighter than the prior metal design, the plastic composite material's superior heat rejection capabilities also help to maintain cooler intake air temperatures. On the other hand, intake systems made of metal castings or piping can actually hold onto underhood heat, warming the incoming air. The SF Air Box enhances the remarkable performance of the SF Intake by providing the advantages of a cold air intake. Cold air from the front grill is directed to the SF Air, which houses the SF intake, by the factory inlet. The intake system is protected from hot engine bay air that depletes horsepower. This unique design also separates rainwater from the intake air, eliminating the water ingestion issues that plague in-fender cold air intakes.

As with all aftermarket intakes for MAF-based Subarus appropriate tuning is required for safe engine performance. COBB Tuning offers Accessport Off-The-Shelf (OTS) maps optimized for the SF Intake for the 05-06 Legacy GT. Any 2007-2009 model year Legacy GT will require custom tuning to run properly with the SF intake installed.
